What does NTAF do to help professionals
?

While social workers, transplant coordinators and case managers work to help create the best possible outcomes for their patients, raising money for uninsured expenses is simply not within their power.

Trained patient services coordinators at NTAF are able to
provide this next layer of patient support. We work with patients before transplantation, through the transplant itself, and often for years after transplant to raise funds.  For catastrophic injury patients, NTAF staff works with patients and families from the time of injury, for as long as patients continue to fundraise or apply for funds.

NTAF is a trusted link to the financial end of transplantation and recovery from catastrophic injury with over 23 years experience helping patients launch and sustain fundraising campaigns.

What does NTAF actually do for patients
?

NTAF provides ongoing practical guidance, compassionate support and administrative services for patients throughout the fundraising process, before and after transplantation, and following spinal cord and other catastrophic injuries.

NTAF talks with patients to determine whether or not fundraising is feasible given their unique circumstances.  NTAF can help tailor a plan to meet both ambitious and modest fundraising goals, and can work with fundraising groups both large and small -- even if the committee comprises only the patient and a few family members or friends.  NTAF will help patients and their volunteers develop everything from tribute sheets with a personal and persuasive story, to online donation materials, flyers, press coverage and other materials.

Once patients read through the material NTAF provides and decide to fundraise with our organization, patients begin planning individually-tailored fund-raising campaigns with their NTAF patient services coordinators.

Patients complete an application which includes questions concerning financial need.  This application is reviewed by a transplant or Catastrophic injury medical professional who adds relevant insurance information.

Funds raised come to NTAF where they are held in Regional Restricted Funds in honor of the patient, for the region where the patient lives, together with other funds raised in that region.

Once the completed application demonstrating financial need has been approved, a patient may submit a request for assistance (Fund Request Form) with appropriate proof of expense.  The NTAF Board of Directors has final approval over the disbursement of funds, based upon patient financial need.

NTAF staff is proud to provide an array of supportive services for patients and their volunteer networks  -- from the first phone call where callers are greeted by caring, professional administrative staff  --  to interactions with patient services coordinators, who help plan and execute fundraisers -- to the assistance patients receive as they plan media coverage and create websites -- to the very practical help offered by the financial services staff, who provide patients with crucial help in applying for assistance with expenses.  NTAF staff take its commitment to your patients very seriously.

How does the financial part work?

When patients fundraise with NTAF, they agree to have funds raised deposited into the Regional Restricted Fund for the Region in which they reside.  Because monies raised are deposited into regional restricted funds, contributions are tax-deductible for contributors to the fullest extent permitted by the law.

Patients can apply for funds from the Regional Restricted Fund by submitting a Fund Request Form with documentation for the expense incurred.

NTAF charges a 4% administrative charge on all funds raised.

The major benefits to patients are:

  • Tax deductibility for contributors to the fullest extent of the law.
  • Fiscal assurance for contributors, who can be confident that contributions will be used as intended.
  • Matching gift possibilities for employers who match contributions.
  • Fundraising guidance and training
  • Media relations guidance
  • Patients can apply weekly for reimbursement or direct payment of medical expenses based on financial need.
